When to travel
Zambia’s dry season runs from May to October and you’ll have great weather and excellent game viewing. If you’re interested in water activities, travel at the end of the dry season, when the Zambezi will be low enough for activities like white water rafting and you can swim in the Devil’s Pool. With the wet season, December to March, comes your only chance to take a boat safari along the Luangwa River as the flood waters are at their highest – an experience not to be missed. Livingstone international airport can be accessed from South Africa and Kenya. A number of international airlines fly into the capital of Zambia, Lusaka, where a short flight could have you in remote safari locations or at Victoria Falls.
A brief 1-week trip could include Victoria Falls or an authentic Lower Zambezi safari. An intrepid traveller may wish to add an extra 1-2 weeks to experience the full Zambian safari itinerary of South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks.
Zambia is a place for the more active traveller and not one we usually suggested for a first-timer to Africa – unless of course it’s just to pop over to view Victoria Falls. Zambia is for those who like the path less travelled. Safari purists, your safari experience here may not be as flashy as some of the more mature safari destinations like Botswana and South Africa, so can offer a more affordable experience with equally amazing wildlife encounters.
