Summary

Stretching from the blue waters of the Indian Ocean to the shores of the vast Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and has the best of Africa condensed within its borders. When travelling in Tanzania you’ll find the world’s most famous safari setting, the Serengeti, Africa’s highest peak, Mt Kilimanjaro, and the ancient wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Feel the earth rumble beneath your feet as millions of animals make their way across the plains of the Serengeti during the great wildebeest migration. This African safari experience is once in a lifetime. After witnessing the wildlife, float away in the tropical waters surrounding the Zanzibar archipelago containing more than 50 islands off the coast of Tanzania. Safari to sea, it’s a winning travel combination.

All I wanted to do was get back to Africa. We had not left it, yet, but when I would wake in the night I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.

When to travel

The Great Migration is a cycle, moving across the plains of Tanzania and neighbouring Kenya over 12 months so you can catch it just about any time of year. Choose January to March for the calving in the south or May to September for the migration itself.

FAQ

1. How do I get to & around Tanzania?

Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam are the Tanzanian International airports which can be easily reached by the Middle Eastern carriers and South African Airways. Rwanda, Uganda and Zanzibar can also be easily reached from either airport. Reputable carriers will connect you to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and other National Parks and safari locations within Tanzania. Private transfers are also a popular option and offer the ultimate in comfort.

2. How long should I spend in Tanzania?

There are too many highlights to estimate the amount of time you will need for a journey through Tanzania! It is dependent on if you travel by plane or car and what you want to see. As a guide, a flying or driving safari experience can range between 1-4 weeks. You will need a week to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. While in Tanzania, you are too close not to add another week to visit neighbouring Rwanda or Zanzibar.

3. Will Tanzania suit my travel style?

Tanzania is a fantastic destination for all types of travellers, young and old, solo or family, romantic honeymooners or outdoor adventure seekers. If you are after the ‘big five’ and an Out of Africa safari experience Tanzania is a fantastic place to travel and offers superb animal watching opportunities in high comfort.

4. What attractions and experiences can I find in Tanzania?

Mt Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Pemba Island, Lake Victoria, Tarangire National Park, wildlife encounters, hot air ballooning, bird watching, horse riding safari, trekking, festivals and events, unique landscapes and water activities.

5. What is the overall vibe of Tanzania?

Tanzania has a virtually unblemished safety record, is well developed and is an easy country to travel through with a solid tourist infrastructure. Road are good both North and South, but if you want to get to the more remote resorts fly safaris are best. Find great seafood on the coast where you can expect local spices to influence flavours. A safari camp is often tented rather than permanent structure lodges to minimise their footprint on this sensitive ecosystem.

6. What essential information should I know before visiting Tanzania?

Currency: Tanzanian Shilling.

Visa: Australian citizens require an entry visa for Tanzania. You can obtain a visa at the port of entry upon payment of the visa fee or in advance at an embassy. Ports of entry include Kilimanjaro International Airport, Zanzibar International Airport, Der-es Salaam International Airport and Namanga border crossing point between Tanzania and Kenya. We recommend if possible obtaining a visa prior to arrival as rules and regulations for Tanzania have a tendency to change without warning.

Language: Swahili and English are the official languages and you will get by easily with English widely spoken.

Health: Anti-malarial’s are required. We recommend visiting your travel doctor for the latest information on travel vaccinations.

Capital: Dodoma.
